Art of illusionArt of Illusion is a free, open source software package for creating 3D-graphics. It provides tools for 3D-modeling , creating and mapping textures and rendering both, still images and animations. Models, that are created in Art of Illusion, can also be exported for 3D-printing in. Art of Illusion is a 3D-graphics software , with similar intent of use as for example 3DS-Max or Maya of the commercial software packages or Blender or Wings 3D on the freeware side. Some user reviews describe Art of Illusion as 'intuitive' 'straight forward to learn' and 'good candidate for the first 3D modelling tool' , while some characterize it as 'software for experienced CAD users' or taking plenty of time to figure out . For its capabilities it has been described 'powerful, comprehensive and extensible' .
I am a complete amateur. Honestly, I don't truly understand the difference between these two types of programs: I know that "artists use 3D modelers, engineers use CAD", but that doesn't tell me enough. I am an astrophysicist. I want to draw a model of a space colony idea that I have been working on.
Art of Illusion is an intuitive 3D modeling software that allows users to develop detailed models and scenes using multiple light sources and objects. Written in Java and distributed under the GNU General Public License, the software is cross-platform and can be downloaded on any computer that supports Java 5 or later, at no cost. The most recent version of the software was released last year with a basic tool set that enables any user to model and render objects in a quick, easy-to-understand interface. Direct-to-disk rendering allows users in a pinch for time to deliver fast results on a single computer while more complex features make the software powerful enough to handle high end models.

AoI is not intended as an engineering computer-aided design CAD tool, but rather as a three-dimensional design system for animated computer graphics. However, it has an extraodinarily minimal, wide-spanning and intuitive user interface that is very easy to learn, and it has the ability to output solids as STL files; STL is the standard format for rapid-prototyped parts. AoI was written by Peter Eastman and others and is completely free and open-source. There is a lot of good clear documentation that comes with AoI, and it is not the intention of this page to duplicate any of that. However, we have found a number of how-to hints that help when using AoI for mechanical design, and those are documented here. The AoI website has detailed instructions for downloading AoI and getting it working under a wide range of operating systems. Once you have installed it, go to the Scripts and Plugins manager in the AoI "Tools" dropdown and get all the scripts and plugins from the web you won't use all of them, but they're quick to download, and this is simpler than deciding which you want and which you don't.

Added procedural lights. Directional lights can cast soft shadows. The raytracer has an option to use less memory. Added commands to lock objects. A viewport can be bound to a light source. Added "Extract Selected Faces" command to the triangle mesh editor.
Art of Illusion is a free, open source 3D modelling and rendering studio. Many of its capabilities rival those found in commercial programs. Highlights include subdivision surface based modelling tools, skeleton based animation, and a graphical language for designing procedural textures and materials. The current version is 3. This version is both stable and powerful enough to be used for serious, high end animation work. If you want some idea of what Art of Illusion is capable of, take a look at the screenshots and art gallery.
