That Time John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s Controversial ‘Two Virgins’ Album Was Seized by PoliceJohn Lennon , Yoko Ono. John Lennon: Two Virgins No. Two Virgins featured a controversial nude photograph on its front cover.
The beginning of John Lennon 's relationship with Yoko Ono was of huge significance, not just to the couple, but also to their families, The Beatles, and those who lived and worked alongside them. It occurred at Kenwood, Lennon's house in Weybridge, Surrey. Lennon was nervous about inviting Ono, so made sure his childhood friend Pete Shotton was also present as she arrived. The lengthy recordings were made in the attic of the house, which Lennon used as a music room. The sounds included birdsong, vocal improvisations, sound effects, feedback and distorted musical instruments, and contained nursery rhymes, music hall songs and novelty piano tunes amid the less orthodox moments.
Unfinished Music No. It was the result of an all-night session of musical experimentation with Yoko in John's home studio at Kenwood , while his wife, Cynthia Lennon , was on holiday in Greece. This made the album controversial to both the public and the parent record company EMI , which refused to distribute it. In an attempt to avoid controversy, the LP record was sold in a brown paper bag, and distributed by Track and Tetragrammaton in the United Kingdom and the United States respectively. The album was followed six months later by Unfinished Music No. Life with the Lions. John Lennon met Yoko Ono in November at the Indica Gallery in London after he received an invitation from its owner, John Dunbar , to preview an exhibition by an obscure Japanese artist.
Long before a body-positive movement really existed, the couple tried to present themselves as simply 'two slightly overweight ex-junkies'. U nfinished Music No 1: Two Virgins , released 50 years ago this month, is only for the most ardent Beatles fans. The first of three experimental albums that John Lennon and Yoko Ono recorded centred around birdsong, garbled shrieking, amplifier feedback, tape loops and distorted instrumentation. The avant-garde record either bored or infuriated most critics. This was not an obvious choice of paper for a notorious Leftist, and when Lennon showed Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr the artwork, the drummer was quick to pick up on the prop. Sure enough, the papers did make a scandal of the photo, however innocent the intentions behind it might have been.

From the cover image of a stark-naked Lennon and Ono to the other-worldly and improvised sounds contained within, Two Virgins was both a singular statement for the time and a line in the sand — not only between Lennon and his fans, but among his band members as well. The album consists of a spur-of-the-moment home-recording session conducted between Lennon and Ono in May, when Lennon's wife Cynthia was away on vacation. When Lennon strolled into the Apple Records offices with tapes of these avant-garde soundscapes and tried to pencil them in for a release date on the label, most of the other Beatles bristled. McCartney and the rest of the band were even less thrilled about the prospects of releasing Two Virgins on their Apple label.
It's arguably the most controversial album cover in rock 'n' roll history, and if authorities in New Jersey had their way, every last one of them would have been destroyed. On Jan. The album, which had been released the previous November, featured a picture John and Yoko stark naked on the cover which, even by today's looser standards, is still not necessarily the most effective way of getting product onto the shelves. As such, it was distributed in a plain brown wrapper with a cutout where the couple's faces were. The photo -- which you can see here in its "not safe for work" form -- was taken in the basement of Ringo Starr 's house, where Lennon was living with Yoko after leaving his first wife, Cynthia.
